Top tips for securing your home from burglaries

As a professional locksmith, I am often asked what is the best way to secure you home from burglaries
The answer is not as simple as you might think, there are many ways to secure your home - but here is my top 5:
Install high-quality deadbolts:
Deadbolts are essential for home security. Look for a deadbolt with a bolt that extends at least one inch into the doorframe. A good quality deadbolt is incredibly difficult to pick or force open.Upgrade your locks
If you have old or worn-out locks, it's time to upgrade. Consider installing locks with a 3 star BSI rating, this indicates that the lock offers the highest level of security. These locks are suitable for use on external doors and have been tested to withstand various forms of attack, including drilling, picking, and bumping.Install lockable window and patio door locks
Windows and patio doors are common entry points for burglars. You can secure them with lockable window and patio door locks that prevent them from being opened from the outside. These locks can be easily installed and are an effective way to increase your home's security.Install an alarm
Alarms can be an effective burglary deterrent. The sound of an alarm can alert neighbours and passersby that something is amiss, which can make it more difficult for burglars to carry out their plans. Additionally, many alarms are connected to a monitoring service, which can dispatch emergency services if a break-in is detected. However, it's important to note that alarms are not foolproof and can be circumvented by determined burglars. To make the most of an alarm system, it's important to use it in combination with other security measures, such as strong locks, reinforced doors and windows, and outdoor lighting.Lock tight
The most important thing in securing your home is also the most obvious. When you are leaving your house, even for 5 minutes, close and lock ALL doors and windows, and switch on the alarm. Most burglaries are opportunistic, don't make yourself an easy target.
Remember that no lock is completely foolproof, but by choosing the right type of lock for your needs and using it in combination with other security measures, you can significantly increase your home's security.
Stay safe - and lock tight.
