What is Boarding-up and when would I use this service?

October 6, 2023

"Boarding up" refers to the act of covering broken or vulnerable windows and doors with wooden boards or panels as a temporary protective measure. This approach offers security, protection, and peace of mind in various circumstances, providing a sturdy and secure barrier against external elements.

Why would I get boarding up done?

Boarding up is necessary under multiple scenarios

Vacant Properties: For properties left unattended for a significant time, boarding up helps deter vandalism, break-ins, and squatters.

Post-break-in Security: After a window is broken, due to accident or burglary, boarding up offers immediate security until a permanent replacement is installed.

Construction & Renovations: It provides a safety barrier during construction or renovation projects, protecting both workers and pedestrians.

The Process of Boarding Up - how do we do it

Assessment: Evaluate the windows and doors that need protection. Measure the dimensions accurately to ensure a snug fit for the boards.

Material Selection: Plywood is the most popular choice due to its durability and cost-effectiveness. The thickness may vary, but a minimum of 1/2 inch is advisable for adequate protection.

Cutting & Fitting: Cut the plywood to cover the window entirely, leaving no gaps. It's crucial to fit the boards tightly to prevent them from being easily removed.

Securing the Boards: Use screws, preferably 2 to 4 inches long, to attach the boards firmly to the window frames. The screw heads should be driven deep to resist tampering.

Access Consideration: When boarding up doors, ensure you have an alternative entry point.

What is Effective Boarding Up

For large windows, we may have to use multiple boards and join them securely.

We often reinforce the plywood with 2x4s for added stability, especially in areas prone to strong winds.

Although it can be done yourself, we would always recommend you consider professional boarding-up services (such as ours) if you lack the tools or expertise to do it yourself.
